Marriage, Heathfield Sussex 1884
« on: Friday 17 June 16 15:47 BST (UK) »
If someone could look up this marriage I would be most grateful and perhaps solve a mystery.

2nd November 1884 Heathfield Sussex, John Wilson and Margaret Smith.   Margaret's father is supposed to be Reuben and I'm looking for his occupation.

Many thanks, Val ???

I'm sorry I don't know, I got this from Ancestry, it only says Margaret's father was Reuben and John Wilson's father was also John.  I do know it is the correct marriage but which Reuben??  Thought maybe an occupation would help or even witnesses.  Margaret does not come up in a census with her father Reuben.

The marriage took place in the Hailsham Registration District.
The Hailsham RS consisted of some 11 parishes at the time.
See: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/hailsham.html

So you would need to look at the Parish Register for each of these parishes.
And, of course, they may not have married in a Church of England church?

It is not possible to look at a Marriage Certificate - you have to buy a copy!

If I have the right couple in later census records then Margaret was born in Maidstone and husband John is a Hawker.  They seem to move around quite a bit judging from the birth places of their children.  It is highly likely that Reuben is also a traveller but you will need to buy the certificate to prove that.

Thank you so much JohnW65, so now I can look for one that  says Hawker and not shoeman.
Most appreciated and thanks everyone else for your input.
