Date estimation and year of buildings - Yarrowford, Scotland
« on: Sunday 19 June 16 13:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm assuming a year of around 1900s for the photo. However, I'm more interested in the year the buildings were constructed. Any ideas?

Thanks

Early Nineteenth Century? At a guess?

Much harder to tell with buildings than with people!

Is that photo taken near Selkirk?

Romilly.

I would say it is very difficult to judge especially with such a small photograph. Buildings in this style were built over many years, using different materials including local stone and thatch. These look to be in good order with sash windows (unsure of building materials) so maybe not too old when this photo was taken - but long enough for the shrubberies to grow to the size you see in front of the cottages.

I would concur with early to mid 1800's. Any earlier and it is likely that the doors would be shorter, where adults would have to 'duck' to enter. The adults in the background appear to indicate the height. I think that the roof is also a clue, being very straight and even.

The background to this.

My 4th great grandfather had a small inn at Yarrowford in the early 1800s. My 3rd Great grandfather was schoolmaster in 1843.

The stables are the building on the right of the photo.

In the 1860s the Post Office was built.

In later maps the schoolhouse stands apart, but the alignment of the row is still good.

(Scrap that, looking at an 1897 map the schoolhouse was build after 1858 and the original school seems to be the building on the same side of the road as the smithy.)

I can find no mention of a schoolhouse in Yarrow prior to the 1840s.

I will try to find better images of this street.

Thanks for the info so far.

As is the one my 3rd great grandfather moved to (Mount Benger). Unfortunately the Yarrowford schoolhouse isn't the one he taught in.

Great maps Dave. So are you saying that this is not the place you are interested in?

If I was following your explanation correctly, (but I may not have been) are you implying that there is a smithy within the row of houses in the photo? If so I don't think there is and I think that these are all dwelling houses.

I think the lady near the water pump looks much more recent than early 1800s.

I don't know  but her fashion looks more like Edwardian/early 20th Century to me.
Could be wrong of course - it has been known!!   ::) ;) ;)
