Louden or Lowden
« on: Monday 20 June 16 19:36 BST (UK) »
I'm intrigued by two illegitimate births in my family tree.

The first one is a birth for Peter Louden Fraser, son of Margaret Fraser, Rireabhach, Lochbroom on 24 July 1880.
The second one is a birth for Jane Mackenzie, daughter of Christina Mackenzie, Rireabhach, Lochbroom on 23 August 1880

These families lived next door to each other.

On the 1881 census:
Peter is named as Peter Lowden, and is a grandson to the head of the house, George Fraser.
Jane is named as Jane Lowden, and is a grand-daughter to the head of the house, Simon Mackenzie.

On the 1891 census:
Peter is still named as Peter Louden, and is a grandson to the head of the house, George Fraser.
Jane, however, is to be found at The Easter Ross Combination Poorhouse in Tain, with her mother and brothers.

I'm assuming that some guy with the name Louden / Lowden had his evil way with the two girls, Christina Mackenzie and Margaret Fraser leaving them with illegitimate children.

My mystery is, who was this guy Louden / Lowden, because I can find no mention of the name except with the children, Peter and Jane.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Do either of the children give a fathers name when they married?

When Jane married in 1905, she gave a father's name as Alexander Mackenzie (deceased). That was possibly to keep respectability, because on the 1911 census, her mother, Christina Mackenzie was living with Jane and her husband and is stated to be unmarried.

As far as I know, Peter never married.
