Can someone help with my grandfather?
« on: Friday 24 June 16 20:41 BST (UK) »
I have always felt like a dead end when it comes to family history because I can't even get past my grandparents. Is someone here able to help me track down my grandfather's birth record? You have no idea how much I would appreciate it. My (admittedly poor due to a lack of experience in family history) efforts so far have gotten me nowhere.

Patrick Kevin McLaughlin.

Born somewhere in county Cork or perhaps just the city of Cork. I remember hearing him speak of Cork when I was a young child but being so young had no sense of whether he was speaking specifically of the city or not.

Born in September? (14th? 24th? These dates really are guesses from vague childhood memories and it is sadly possible that September is not even correct but that memory feels stronger)

Year possibly 1914? 1916? 1917? At least somewhere in that decade. My grandmother was born in 1918? (December 3rd?) and rightly or wrongly I assume he was older but visually remember that he can't have been that much older.

What I can tell you is that at some point he married a Christina Matthews, born in Glasgow, moved to England, and had children named Patricia, Anna, Tony, Kevin, Christopher, John, Christina and Margaret.

This feels like a dead end to me and that I am destined to know nothing about my family history beyond the people I have actually met. The family has been sadly distant and fractured due to my grandfather's alcoholism and what scant information I have been able to give here is really all anyone remembers. But in my heart I am hoping that one of you is a family history genius who lives for questions like this and can help me pull something out of all this half information Harry Potter style. Please if anyone can help me out I will be eternally grateful.

Best wishes to all and thanks in advance for reading.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, would I be correct that at least two of the children were born in Aylesbury?

In real life I am physically laughing out loud with joy right now, God bless you Sir or Madam. Yes, you HAVE to be onto something because the family has lived on and off in that area for years. While I do not know the exact locations of all my Aunts and Uncles births without tracking them down and asking, I know Margaret was born in Aylesbury and Kevin was 100% not. Given birth order I am guessing John or Christina might possibly have been born there too. You must be onto something?? Is there any more information I can give you that might help??

Mabel, yes! That IS him. He definitely died July '04, there is no doubt as I remember getting the phone call.

What can I do now? Can I request a copy of his death certificate? Or use those numbers to find his birth certificate? Because that would tell me the names of my great grandparents for the first time ever.

They'd get you his death cert, which won't tell you much if anything about his family background

I'm not doing as well finding a birth registration - there's no Patrick Kevin, but a few Patricks with variations of the surname, none in the Cork area. Have looked at July - Sept and Oct- Dec 1915 registrations in case his was delayed a few weeks into the new quarter

July - Sept
Patrick McLoughlin - Swineford, Co Mayo

Oct - Dec
Patrick McLaughlin    - Callan, Co Kilkenny
Patrick McLaughlin    - Inishowen, Co Donegal
Patrick McLaughlin    - Limavady, Co Antrim

Mabel, I don't know what magical tools you are using to find all this wonderful information so quickly but can they find marriage certificates? Wouldn't my grandfather and grandmother's marriage certificate have his birthplace on it? Sadly, I am of little help there. I don't know the location or year of their marriage.
