Elizabeth Whiffing nee Rossiter
« on: Monday 27 June 16 06:03 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I'm trying to establish a family line for Elizabeth Whiffing nee Rossiter. Elizabeth married Cratchrode Whiffing on 14 Nov 1779 at St Dunstans, Stepney. I have a birth date for her of 1756 at St George, Middlesex, and a death date of 1789 at Poplars but I'm not sure either is 100% correct. Elizabeth's husband's name is often spelled Crotchrode Wiffen which makes it rather difficult. It's Elizabeth's family I am trying to find - I have a Thomas Rossiter as her father and Elizabeth for her mother but I'm not sure that is right either. Can anyone please help??
cheers
Jill

Hello
It looks like that death has to be correct because Catchrode Whiffering remarries 27.4.1789 by licence at St Dunstan's to Lydia Hopkins also widowed.
It's annoyi ng that the burial in 1789 doesn't give an age.
But that baptism is the only one I can see.
Thomas was a perukemaker from Mile End Stepney who married clandestine London marriages 28.5.1749 To Elizabeth Stilton .
It looks like he w3as buried at  St Dunstan 2.11.1787 from Mile End.

I'm not sure about that 18 Feb 1789 Burial - there are 2 different registers for the same Burial at Dunstan Stepney; both  list her with the same people being buried before and after her - so it is the same person....

One of them, for Eliz'th WHIFFING, does appear to list an age - and as far as I can work out, it says 9h - which I take to be 9 hours?  The 'P' stands for Poplar, as in 'at Poplar', as per the other register.

Cheers

I haven't been able to find anything, but Jill the name Crotchrode Wiffen really gave me a giggle. Please don't think i am being insensitive.

You're right there is a problem
It's actually the cost of the funeral 4 shillings and 9 pence convulsions which is what she dies of and 11 mths, which I assume is her age.
Damn.
but if you look closer that's all against the row of William John Bond of Rat and Elizabeth Whiffing P is below with nothing against her name.
There's a 95 below that but it looks like the verger has added other figures across the page as he totals up the money he's owed.
I make it 89 shilling and 7 pence plus the cost of Elizabeth's funeral which on average would be 4 shillings and 9 pence totaling 94 6d.
So not far off 95 .
No need to panic. It still looks like her.

Thanks everyone for your help. Yes, I definitely agree if you had the name Cratchrode (or Crotchrode) you would have to have had a very thick skin.  ;D
I've found Elizabeth's death details as well as the clandestine marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth. I didn't know what a perukemaker was, but now I do, realise Thomas would have been much in demand.
This hobby certainly needs detective tendencies!
Happy searching
