John Plaskett
« on: Thursday 30 June 16 06:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have a look up request if possible, John Plaskett was my great, great, great grandfather and he was born in Cumberland in circa 1833 .In the 1871 and 1911 census returns he was a coalminer but in 1891 he was an Inn Keeper, living somewhere with his wife, Hannah his sons Robert and Joseph and his grandson Robert Gibbons.Does anyone know where this census return was and the name of the Inn. I only have the IG reference which is RG12 4308/119.
Many thanks,
Barnsey.

The family lived at 115 Crosby (St. or Rd.) Crosby , Cockermouth, Cumberland.

The Inn was "Royal Oak" and he was neither employer nor employed.

It seems to have had less than 5 rooms .

Son Robert was 30 year old Miner, son Joseph was 24 year old mason and Robert went to school. Hannah was blank ;D
All were born in Cumberland, but I am not good at reading the local place names.

Hi Barnsey :)

Your family are shown as PLASKET and were living at the Royal Oak, Crosby.

The full census reference is RG12/4308/119/21.

Carol

P.S. sparrett has the right family, but '115' is a schedule number, not part of the address.
P.P.S. Looking at the address again, it is just 'Crosby Royal Oak', Crosby being the town/village rather than the name of a road.  Cockermouth was the administrative area that included Crosby at that time.

Hi rolnora :)

Thanks for posting the details - I didn't want to get the local place names wrong!

However I don't think it's 'Old Royal Oak'.  The first address on the page is simply 'Crosby' and all the rest are 'do' (with a big fat d) meaning 'ditto'.  The last entry looks like 'do Royal Oak' in my opinion.

Yes looking at it again I think you are quite right. So it's just the " Royal Oak" Crosby as shown on the brilliant map that Stan has posted. :)
