Max Bargold
« on: Monday 04 July 16 20:45 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone help please?

I'm trying to find information about my wife's Great Grandfather, Max Bargold.

He was a German immigrant to England, not sure when he arrived. On the 1911 Census he's down as Max Bergold (mis-transcribed), a Boarder who's Single, a General Labourer, 23 years old, born in 1888 & a German Resident.

He married Florrie Bowman on Dec 30 1911. His father is shown as Henry Bargold on the Marriage Certificate.

They had four children, Timothy, Catherine, Ann & William. I believe he died in 1924.

Can anyone provide any other information, or suggestions where to look?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Graeme

Hi garstonite,

Yeah, he was in Felling, Gateshead. Worked for a Painting firm.

Can't find any immigration records, thought maybe his name has been Anglicised.

I believe he did die in Weardale.

My wife's grandmother was a toddler then, and nothing of Max's origins/family has been handed down.

Thanks

Graeme

I notice there were no children 1914-18. Was he interred as an alien ?

Well - I can't name them as they may be alive - but Florrie had EIGHT children - not 4 - but - Max died 1924 and Florrie had 4 children after that , but all named Bargold mothers maiden name Bowman

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Abargold~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Aengland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1911-1940~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Amax~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Aflorrie~%20%2Brecord_country%3AEngland

Jim - Timothy was b 1914 - the next child in 1920 - he may have actually fought in WW1

ADDED - correction 9 children
1912 Elizabeth Burgold - mmn Bowman - obviously should have been Bargold

Hi all,

Thanks for looking into this.

There is a back story to the children, after Max died, Florrie went on to have several children with her next door neighbour, never married, and called all the children Bargold.

Elizabeth is a new one to me, we all thought Timothy was the oldest, as that is what Catherine (my wife's Grandmother) told us. I'll have to look into it.

And yes, he was interred during WW1.

Graeme

It is unlikely you will find an immigration record from Germany to the UK - unfortunately mostly  lists were of passengers arriving in the UK from ports outside Europe and the Mediterranean between 1878 and 1960.
