William Stone baptism St Philip and St Jacob 1836 look up request
« on: Monday 04 July 16 22:38 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help me to find the parents of William Stone, born in 1836 (or possibly 1837) in St Jude's district of Bristol in the parish of St Philip and St Jacob. Is there perhaps a birth or baptism for him please? Many thanks  :)

Family Search has a number of William Stone baptisms in Gloucester between 1835-1837 including one in the parish of St Philip and St Jacob on 17.9.1837

However - have you confirmed his fathers name from William's marriage cert?

Thank you for your reply. He was married in the East Indies as he was in the army there and the marriage certificate doesn't mention parents. He should be aged 5 on the 1841 census, which would show his family, but I can't find him although I'm fairly sure he would have been living in the same area as he enlisted from that area.  :-\

There is an 1841 entry parents George & Mary Ann living in St Philip and St Jacob but as there are a number of William Stone's in that age range it's impossible to say which one is yours if his fathers name is unknown

If the 17 Sep 1837 baptism is correct, William's parents are William and Sarah. Do such a family group appear on 1841 or 1851 censuses? (He had already gone overseas with the army by 1861). They may well have married in the same area, so are there any marriage records of a William Stone and Sarah between, say, 1820-1840, giving her maiden name?

 Thank you  :)

It was from some army records - he was in the Crimean war.

How can I access the 1851 census information you gave?

Thank you for all your helpful replies.

I have found a date of birth now - 17th August 1836. Unfortunately, that is just before public records were kept, so would a birth certificate be available anywhere? If so, would it give his parents details, and how would I obtain it?

Otherwise, I think the 17 September 1837 baptism is most likely to be his. If so, are there any St Philip and St Jacob (or nearby) marriage records for a William Stone and Sarah between about 1820-1840?

Many thanks for all your help  :)
