PATRICK FITZPATRICK c1827-38 Cavan
« on: Tuesday 05 July 16 15:20 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am new to researching in depth Irish genealogy and therefore require assistance please.

I am searching for a baptism for a PATRICK FITZPATRICK Cavan the YOB varies on census's 1861 = 1827, 1871 = 1831, 1881 = 1836, 1891 = 1828, thus causing me great difficulties, although I haven't been able to find any baptism's in Cavan for a PF can anyone assist me please.

I have done a bit of research and find that Irish surnames can have variations from previous surnames and FITZPATRICK is one of them:

FITZPATRICK - BANN - Mac Giolla PHADRAIG -  Mac SEARTHA
Mac Giolla Phadraig - Mac Gilla Patraic
"Son of Devotee of (St) Patrick of the medieval period
Mac Giolla Phadraigs were heriditary Kings of Osraige.
Today the name is commonly translated to "FITZPATRICK"

So.... does this mean that my Patrick Fitzpatrick could be Phadraig Bann, Phadraig Phadraig, Phadraig Seartha or Phadraig Patraic in a baptism entry  ???

To add a little more info about him, his wife was Mary and they appear on 1861 Cen @ Hawick, Scotland then 1871 Warrington, England where they remain until the 1891 Cen after which I cannot find any possible deaths or them on 1901/11 Census's and have wondered if they returned to Ireland.

MARY LITTLE states born Fermanagh 1827-37 again another headache and again surname LITTLE can be BEAGAIN or BEGGAN - what would Mary translate to ???

If anyone can help me I would be very grateful, they have eluded me for a few years now  ::)

Religion?

I have their marriage details, which was written in Latin, married Castleterra. I will need to get my external hard drive out to find the details, he is named as Patricus Fitzpatrick and her Mariah Little, I think its Mariah and a priest said it would be Mary.
I would presume they were Catholic as the priest which covered Castleterra said it was his church and parish.

Their names in Irish is not going to help you find them. First names are likely to be in English or Latin on baptisms, surnames won't be changed.
The first thing you need is their marriage for fathers names at least, hopefully more than that.
Did they marry in Ireland or Scotland?
Second you need their religious denomination.

Ideally you need the parish or better still the townland they came from.

There were a few post while I wrote the above, have you got fathers names from the marriage.

No fathers names for either on marriage, which causes more problems and married Ireland, I will post the marriage details once I have found them.
All that is on the census's is that he from Caven and her from Fermanagh.
Surnames, OK so if Latin would his be Patricus Fitzpatrick and her Mariah (Mary) Little ???
I will have a look at the websites mentioned above.
One more question is Castletara the same place as Castleterra ???

Looks likely I won't find either without their parents names or at least the fathers' names.

Thank you for you help

If you look at the link hallmark posted the variant form of Castletara is Castleterra.

What year was the marriage?
