Hit a dead end with my family tree
« on: Tuesday 05 July 16 19:05 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone!

I'm new to these boards I've been tracing my Mum's side of the family tree and managed to find four generations, even meeting some of my Grandma's cousins and finding one of them lived in the States who I've been in regular contact with!

I've begun my Dad's side, I always knew this would be a challenge as information wasn't on my side compared to my Mum and Dad passed away unfortunately. However I did manage to find my Dad's Dad's Mum and Dad through my Granddad's birth certificate etc but I can't seem to move forward with it.

What I do know through my Granddad's birth certificate is his mother was an Ellen Jones (she was Jackson as far as I'm aware her previous husband who I can't find the name of died and they had a child Harold together before she married my Great Granddad Herbert Leonard Jones in 1920 and went on to have Herbert (my grandad) and Leonard her maiden name was Kirby.)

Would anyone be able to give my search a kick start? I'm particularly looking for Ellen's DOB or finding out the name of her previous husband or anything about these people! From what I've found so far, it seems to be all Preston Lancashire area.

Thanks very much

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Possible baptism for Ellen:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk

Baptism: 14 Jun 1893 St Peter, Preston, Lancashire, England

Ellen Kirby - [Child] of Edward Kirby & Emma
Abode: 35 Brougham St

Occupation: Fitter
Baptised by: F Cleworth

If this is the correct baptism, then there is this possible marriage on FreeBMD:

Kirby, Edward to Livesey, Emma; June Qtr 1887; Preston Registration District; Volume 8e Page 807.

Lancs BMD website shows that the marriage took place at Preston, All Saints.

LancsOPC has the following details for the marriage:

29th May 1887 at All Saints, Preston, Lancs.

Groom - Edward Kirby, Age 22, Tin Plate Worker, Bachelor of 5 Gardner Street
Bride - Emma Livesey (x), Age 21, Spinster of 108 North Road

Groom's Father: Thomas Kirby, Wheelwright
Bride's Father: Thomas Livesey, Weaver

Witnesses: Thomas Farrer, Jane Farrer

Married by Banns by Septimus Hutchinson.

The (x) after Emma's name means that she made her mark (an x) as she was possibly illiterate.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

I suspect Ellen's first husband died in the first world war
either
Lance Corporal John Jackson, from Preston, died 8/8/16
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/549609/JACKSON,%20J

or Private John Jackson from Preston, died of wounds aged 24 on 10/7/17
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/145097/JACKSON,%20JOHN

However the second son is 'son of Mary Ann Jackson' - so I would say he was single

An Ellen Jones born 1893 dies in Preston in 1956 so thought I'd look on the free part of the 1939 register and there is an Ellen Jones, born 1893 living in Preston - with a Herbert L Jones (born 1896), also a Herbert (born 1928), Harold Jackson(Jones) and someone closed (I suspect Leonard)

If you brought this entry it would give you Ellen's date of birth (and Herberts) as well as where they lived and possibl
