Inaccurate census?
« on: Wednesday 06 July 16 13:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I've been tracing my Dad's side of the family tree and have come across something quite confusing. My Grandfather's Dad Herbert Leonard Jones (1896) was born to a Robert Jones (1863) now I've found records of him living in Shropshire - yet his census records claim he's from Liverpool originally which has got me completely baffled. The Liverpool link isn't completely random - as he married his wife Louisa there according to what I've found. Is it possible that the census record was inaccurate from my family's side? I'd hate to think I was barking up the wrong tree! ???

Cheers

Sarah

I've found records of him living in Shropshire -

Can you clarify what records these are?

If I am looking at the right family, they are in Liverpool in 1901.

The census record is from the Enumerators book which is a copy of the information entered on the householder's schedule, which is filled in by the householder.

There is certainly a birth registered in West Derby District (part of Liverpool) in October-December 1896 for Herbert Leonard Jones.  There are no other instances of Herbert Leonard Jones appearing in birth registrations in England and Wales January 1894 - December 1898.

Perhaps if you give us the census reference then we can look at the image.

Correction:    West Derby registration district  is  a neighbouring  registration district  to Liverpool registration district.        West Derby  registration district  covers Crosby,  Bootle and other parts of Lancashire.

I'm starting to think looking at it again it's Ancestry typos that's caused the confusion as opposed to the Census records! I suppose my brain has melted a little after hours of doing this  ;)

The Herbert Leonard Jones born in 1896 was my Grandad's Dad and he was born to a Robert Jones (1896) and Louisa Marion with Robert's parents being William Jones (1823) and Margaret Jones. Would anyone be able to confirm I'm right here? or help with with any locations? It all appears to be Wales end. Thanks!

Let's get the West Derby issue out of the way  ::)  :-X http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/west%20derby.html

There's no doubt, as BumbleB has said that Herbert Leonard was born in West Derby RD. The family were living there in 1901  :-X

Hi,
Why?
His Father Robert was a Railway Guard and these people moved around.
Have you got Herbert's Baptism record from Liverpool?
Also the marriage record from the Parish Book.
(I have saved them just in case you don't have it.)
Where was Louisa born?
