English emigration records John Patrick Gannon
« on: Wednesday 06 July 16 14:03 BST (UK) »
So I'm currently trying to find two family strains - one from Ireland, named Gannon, who moved here pre 1934 and from Germany who moved pre 1901 named (possibly) Fritz.

I'm struggling to find any records of these. Particularly the Gannons, who I know definately moved over, but I can barely find ANY Gannons, let alone the particular ones I'm after.

Were immigration records kept carefully back then? Or is it possible I'm searching for documentation which may not exist?

I'm quite new to thise, so please bare with me!
Thanks

There were no passenger lists from Ireland to the UK or from Germany to the UK. Most passenger lists are from ports outside Europe and the Mediterranean between 1878 and 1960

So, you are actually wanting immigration records? ;D

Ireland was a part of the UK until 1922, so their passage would have been on a domestic ferry.
No passenger records exists for such journeys.

Your German ancestor may have applied for Naturalisation, and/or British Citizenship?

Thanks for this information - I have been looking for ages, so it's good to know I can stop looking now as there aren't any records. The link for naturalisation is helpful. If someone married in the UK, would that remove the need for them doing this? I know that two siblings came here from Germany - a female who married and a male, about whom I don't know as much.

It used to be the case that a woman assumed her husband's nationality on marriage.
And I believe the children did, too.

There are no immigration records for Irish people in Britain because...

1. Historically the whole of Ireland was in the UK.
2. After Home Rule people living in the six north eastern counties remained British Subjects.
3. After Home Rule people living in the other twenty-six counties retained a special status in the UK that meant they were not considered as aliens.
