"At the end of February, FriendsReunited sadly closed down."

I have just read a message from friendsreunited.co.uk (haven't been on it for years)

"At the end of February, FriendsReunited sadly closed down."

The site was great until FB (which was free) came along. Just a pity they hadn't gone the same route as FB using advertising to pay the costs & lowered their fees to a minimal as a lot of people on FB use their married names whereas FR was for maiden names & easy access to old school chums.

Just saying......

Is it not the case that some people believe  there is insufficient Privacy safeguards  on FB?

SB.....I would say so but at the same time FR could have continued how it was if the cost was lowered substantially.

I'm sure my last payment was £10 per year......to contact school friends (nothing else).

There were millions on that site so a £1 fee would have been enough to give them an income  ???

Privacy there is as tight or as loose as you want it to be. Too many people leave themselves wide open by allowing their posts to be seen by anyone.

It is a shame about FriendsReunited as it didn't really work in the same way as FB - did you always have to pay, I don't remember paying when I joined years ago?

Groom,

You are correct about people on FB being the ones to show their business/personal details etc. however, I am saying that because it was free (but after the original free one which escapes me as I never used it), people just wouldn't pay the £ for FR as they could search old friends themselves.

I think my 1st fee for FR was £5.00 from memory around early 2000's but it jumped a lot over the years until it was £10.00 when I decided it wasn't worth the fee.

If it was ever free it was prior to me hearing about the site.

I don't think many younger people still use Facebook do they - they've moved on to the next thing such as WhatsApp and Tumblr.

Never used Friends Reunited but I do use FB for keeping in touch with relatives (ages ranging from teenagers to their 90s) all over the world. Two branches of my family have private pages where we share photos, plan reunions, etc.
