« on: Saturday 09 July 16 06:43 BST (UK) »
Hi+, I've a querry re my G.G/father James Gordon born 1846 in Glenbuchat.
his mother was Mary Roy & father =Alexander Gordon+, the only info I could find was from 1851 census, I traced Mary & her family but Alex the father just disappears,  he must have been in Glenbuchat for sometime to associate with Mary. where he came from & went to I've been unable to find. any help would be wonderful.

"...he must have been in Glenbuchat for sometime to associate with Mary"

Not necessarily, I believe that it was known for the lads to go and marry at the place of the ladies, so he could have met her away from home.

What was the occupation of Alex and where was the last place he was located?

For those, like me, who had no idea where Glenbuchat is:

It's in Aberdeenshire, Scotland!

I've never heard of the place before. ::)

I have found elsewhere that James was not found living with parents on the '51 and '61 census, could it be either that parents were deceased, or that mother wasn't married to the father of James?

"1851 census as the nephew of Alexander (age 56) & Mary Roy(Age 63) of Belnaboth he was 6, & in 1861 census he's listed as the grandson & scholar although his age is now 13 (not 16)"

Assuming of course this is the same James.

May I ask where daughter Mary born 12 May 1823 of the above is, on the '41 and '51census. She wasn't with her parents on either census?

Here is the possible mother Mary, mother of your James:

I think Mary Roy was at Belnaboth (Glenbucket) in 1841 working as a female servant, age 17 (Freecen)

There wouldn't be a Gordon nearby, would there, Isobel?

Interesting: there is George Farquharson Nephew 8 Scholar living at the Roy home on the '51 and an Ann FARQUHARSON 18 - Aberdeenshire - at the household where Mary Roy 17 and sister Charlotte 10 are servants in 1841.
On the '61 young George is a servant at Strathdon.
'71 a lodger, stone cutter at Peterhead

Also on the '41 at Strathdon there is Ann Roy - servant aged 20 at the same residence as a William Farquharson ag labourer, aged 30.

Mary on the '51 at Towie -Aberdeenshire

John Clark   34 Farm Servant Aberdeenshire - Towie
Mary Clark 24 Farm Servants Wife Aberdeenshire - Glenbuchat(Originally: Aberdeenshire - Glenbucket)
Peter Son 12 Aberdeenshire - Kildrummy
Thomas Son 7 Aberdeenshire - Kildrummy Twin
Ann   Dau 7 Aberdeenshire - Kildrummy Twin
Helen Dau 1 Aberdeenshire - Kildrummy

Based on the family tree link provided, I feel that Peter, Thomas and Ann are from a previous marriage of John's. On the '41 there is an Elizabeth Clark with a 2 year old Peter at Kildrummy.

The way to confirm if this Mary is the daughter of your Alexander and Mary would be to find  a marriage cert for her to John.

Mary Roy or Clark looks to have died at Towie in 1892. Her age is out slightly ( year of birth 1827) but likely to be her. Her death cert on Scotlandspeople should confirm names of husband and parents though from the tree posted by jamjar these would appear to be Alexander Roy and Mary nee Kellas which would match with the couple James was living with in 51 and 61.
