but why call it reg?

Is it referring to the month in which the death was registered?

So for example if I initially put in 1926 as the year if death I'm not asked to fill in this field I'm just asked for district name, volume no, page no.
However putting in 1990 in as death year brings up an additional field, 'reg month and year of registration' not filling this in brings up error message 'register number must be give for the gro reference'

Particulars of the person whose certificate is required

Year death was registered   1990
Surname of deceased *
Forenames of deceased *

Reference information from GRO Index

Year   1990
District name*
Volume Number*
Page Number*
Reg (month and year of registration, mm/yy)*

I am not seeing another box.......can you please copy & paste?

I think you may be talking about the box where you can add your own digits/letters for your own reference but you don't need to if there is no red asterisk.........is that the one ?

That last box reg Annie is the one I'm talking about. That's not present on gro applications for earlier death registrations. I cannot give a month of death as I only know the quarter.

Reg (month and year of registration, mm/yy)*

I would assume you put the qtr month in just the same?

Jan/feb/mar would be Mar.....apr/may/jun would be June

Hmmm it's not crystal is it though. Why not ask for the quarter. For example the index on ancestry says October for the death even though I like you, would say December. I just want to order the thing online not spend time on the phone clarifying what exactly they mean or order it then find out that's not what they wanted.

I wonder if you put the actual month in & not the qtr would it show up as wrong....worth a try if it's only programmed to accept the 4 qrt's  ???

It doesn't show up as wrong but then it's asking for a month and year so I'm just following the formula. Guess I will need to phone them but surely someone on roots chat must have ordered a more recent death certificate and know a definitive answer?!!
