Meath Ireland
« on: Sunday 10 July 16 12:26 BST (UK) »
I am not sure if I am in the right forum, but I have just discovered that my 3rd grt grandfather is from Meath in Ireland but I cannot see his birth on ancestry.
I see that Meath is near Dublin and there is a Thomas Lindsay (thats him!) born in Kingstown, which seems not far from where the google maps puts me in Meath.  He was born around 1822.  This one is 1824 in Kingstown, Dublin.
Any thoughts much appreciated.  I have a few now that are going into Ireland and I am a bit lost as to how to research them.

Thanks  :)
Teresa

Religion?

RC records are online, free.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 so for earlier dates you need to check for a church record of baptism.

Here's the link to the Catholic Parish records-
http://registers.nli.ie/

Kingstown is south of Dublin but Meath is northwest so not really that close in terms of place of birth. Unless you have other details it's probably impossible to say if any record you do find is for the correct person. When and where did your ancestor marry?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
Yes his birth is in Ancestry, just seen it.
Cath and William are his parents.
In the rootsireland site it says his address or mum and dad's address is Dalkey.
Kingstown is now known as Dun Laoghaire.

Maggsie,
Presumably this is the one born Kingstown. Can you see one for Meath?

Teresa,
Is this your ancestor in St Brides, London

1871  424/16/26

Thomas Lindsay 49 yrs born Newcastle, Co Meath
With a son and daughter

It is very feint but has been transcribed as that.

1881 shows Oldcastle, Ireland and with that in mind, 1871 looks more like Oldcastle, Meath.

If this is the right man, his marriage to Eliza Blackburn in 1871 shows his father as Thomas.

His marriage in 1842 to Caroline Watson also has father as Thomas.

I will stop now as I could be going off on the wrong track altogether  ;)

Hi,
A Thomas Lyndsay born in Meath in 1864, in Rathmoylon to a Thomas and Mary and he was a Clergyman C of I.
Not him I think.
My husbands Grandfather spoke with a broad Irish accent leaving Ireland in 1910.
I searched for him and couldn't find him any where in Ireland. He lived in South King Street Dublin.
or King Street South depending on what record you are looking at.
I found him in Glasgow, born there, lived there until he was 4 then went to Dublin.
My Gran and Grandad were from Tipperary, they moved to Dublin and had my Uncle, then they moved back to Tipperary.
So Thomas may have been born in  Kingstown and went to Meath.

Now ... A puzzle.
1841 has James and Mary Lindsay with Thomas, Henry and Caroline Watson all in the same household.
James and Mary are old enough to be parents but the marriages have a Thomas' father as Thomas.
