Dalrymple Street, Girvan
« on: Monday 11 July 16 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to find out about the McKissock family who lived in Dalrymple Street in the 1841 and 1851 census. The father James McKissock was an innkeeper and when they emigrated later that year to Australia he set up a pub/hotel called the Tam O'Shanter.
He and his wife Ann Powell had 6 children in the 1851 census and they all emigrated together later that year. I can only find evidence of births of three of them on Scotlands People, Ann, Elizabeth and Logan, the other three, James, Margaret and Susan don't seem to be registered anywhere. The street seems to be full of people called McKissock, within family groups or scattered around in other buildings. Please can anyone tell me if there is any way of finding out what the pub was called or anything else about this family. The daughter Margaret entered into a bigamous marriage in Australia and I am having problems finding real facts about her and her family.
Thank you
Alison

James M'Kissock is listed in the 1851/52 Post Office Directory for Ayrshire as a Flesher and Innkeeper at the Crown Inn Dalrymple Street, Girvan.

Hi Falkyrn

Thank you, that is brilliant. I promise to be honest and say that I had help when I surprise the others with the name of the pub!

I suppose the Crown Inn in Dalrymple Street has probably already been located, but in case it has not, here it is overlaid on a modern map:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=21&lat=55.2405&lon=-4.8554&layers=79&b=1

You need to zoom out and adjust transparency to see the location today.

Hi Pamelajd

Thank you for your post. Ruskie is right, it is my blog post and it must be working because I wanted it to be out there to attract other researchers so that we could share information!
And thank you Ruskie for the map, another bit of information to add to the cache.
