John Granger, gentleman/excise officer, Idle, Calverley parish
« on: Tuesday 12 July 16 13:12 BST (UK) »
I believe I am descended from a John Granger who married a Mercy Thompson (maiden name Barwick) in Guiseley parish in 1719.

The records I can find are:

1. The marriage on 15 Nov 1719 in Guiseley St Oswald: "John Granger gentleman of the parish of Calverley & Mercy Thompson widower of this parish licensed 1719". Also a licence transcription which says they were both of Calverley parish, John was 25 and Mercy was 22 (I am ordering that document from the Borthwick archives).

2. Mercy's earlier marriage on 15 Feb 1715 as Mercy Barwick to Francis Thompson in Calverley parish.

3. Francis Thompson's burial on 27 Aug 1719 in Calverley parish: "Francis Thompson of Idle cordwain".

4. Baptisms of three children of John & Mercy in Calverley parish:
> Mercy on 10 Apr 1721: "Mercy daughter of Mr Granger Officer of Idle"
> John on 27 Sep 1722: "John son of Mr Granger Officer of Idle"
> William on 11 Jun 1724: "William son of Mr Granger Officer of Excise"

I was wondering if anyone can find anything else on John Granger or Mercy Barwick.

I have the burial date of Francis Thompson as 27th Aug 1718.

The surname Granger has been entered as Grainger.

There is a Mercy Barwick bapt in Guiseley on 21 Aug 1697 d/o George no mother listed.

From BT on FindMyPast
It looks like Ancestry has images of the registers, but the page for aug 1697 is almost unreadable so it isn't listed there. There are a number of children of george baptised in same church earliest being a Richard in Aug 1685, so a marriage in 1683 seems likely.

The nearest is George Barwick to Mary Lupton in Cowthorpe in either 1683 or 1685 depending on which index is used. Date given as 12 Dec. But Cowthorpe is about 20 miles away.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Thanks you both so much! Yes Brian you are right, the burial of Mercy's apparent first husband was in 1718 not 1719.

Do either of you know whether there might be records relating to John's activities as an excise officer? I have searched the wonderful www.calverley.info website but without finding anything.

There is a bit more info about the marriage of George Barwick & Mary Lupton in a transcript of the Cowthorpe registers here (pdf): http://scans.library.utoronto.ca/pdf/3/6/publications39yorkuoft/publications39yorkuoft.pdf

"George Barwick de Wilsill & Mary Lutpon de Harewell Hall both of the parish of Ripon were married the 12 of December 1685".

FindMyPast has a Boyds entry describing a marriage licence for the couple dated 1683.

Thanks for looking Brian, much appreciated. If anyone is interested, I got permission from Borthwick to post a copy of the 1719 marriage licence/bond here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=752777.msg6014774

Thank you both again.
