Manor of Catwick, nr Leven any info please? (once owned by Richard Hood)
« on: Wednesday 13 July 16 12:17 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I am really researching my ancestor George Hood a Tanner & Brewer (d. Selby 1845) and looking at possible places as to where he may have originated and hope to see the Manor of Selby records soon.

Wells Hood and Richard Hood
Recently, I purchased a receipt (featured), from Wells Hood of White Swan Yard, Pavement, York, to a John Dickinson. The 1851 Census for Micklegate, York, has a Wells Hood aged 56 Wine and Spirit Merchant born Dunnington and other information (British Newspaper Archive) also mentions premises at Mint Yard, York. It also seems Wells Hood is linked to Stamford Bridge. He served on the York Council and apparently was an Overseer of the Poor.

I have discovered he was linked to Richard Hood of Stamford Bridge a Wine, Spirits and Seed Merchant.

The 1851 Census for East Stamford Bridge for Richard Hood gives his age as 78 years, a Wine & Spirit Merchant born Leven Yorkshire, which is near Catwick. His wife Caroline Helen Hood aged 56 was born Castle Howard.

A couple of days ago, I made a chance discovery in British History Online that William Wells devised the Manor of Catwick to a Richard Hood, sounds like Richard Hood of Catwick is linked to the above characters.

Marriage paperwork of one Richard Hood, mentions Scarborough.

From British History Online
"(fn. 48) In 1764 Joseph sold the reunited estate to William Wells, and it had passed by 1787 to Well's devisees Richard Hood and his brother William (d. 1852). (fn. 49)"
May be (fn. 48) or (fn. 49)

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/yorks/east/vol7/pp255-261#anchorn49

I have yet to recognise all the references and see which footnote applies.

Despite Manorial records being protected. Also apparently banned from being exported and checking the Manorial Register, there is no listing for the Manor of Catwick, suggesting they might be in private hands, or amongst Solicitors records.

If anyone can shed any further light on documentation for the Manor of Catwick circa 1770s to the 1860 period and especially if there is a Hood family tree somewhere for the above, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Kind regards Mark

This William Hood is on 1851 census for Catwick, unmarried age 80 born Leven as well.

Death duty register mentions Richard Hood of Stamford Bridge - probably means he was executor - looking a likely brother.

Richard Hood 24 of Stamford Bridge and Elizabeth Williford 20 of Scarborough got a marriage licence on 23 Apr 1794.
Marriage on same day, but says spouses father's name was William Hale (bride's surname still given as Williford) and her residence was York.
Unfortunately both transcripts on FindMyPast.
No mention she was a widow and seems a bit young to be widowed at 20

He is likely to be the Richard Hood bapt leven on 9 Aug 1771 s/o Richard and Susanna.
Same couple bapt William on 26 May 1769 at same place, so confirms they are brothers. Can't see any other brothers but several sisters, staring with Grace and Susanne both on 12 Jan 1762. Only transcripts, doesn't say that they are actually twins. There is a Susanna in 1778, so likely the first one died young, unless they named two daughters with almost same name.

I'm not sure how this fits in with your George Hood living in Selby in 1841.

added

was he the George who married Sarah Russell at Selby Abbey on 18 July 1815?
His age stated as 28 wit James Cockin (BT says Jane) and John Dickinson.
