JOHN ROBERTSON asbestos manufacturer?
« on: Friday 15 July 16 08:20 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on my gt gt grandfather who I understand lived in Roseneath Clynder(?) , also how can I trace where he was buried and who his parents might have been.
I am assuming he was an asbestos manufacturer, think someone told me once he was a manufacturing chemist so its more than likely I have got both wrong.
Thank you.

You haven't given any details of his birthyear.

Scotlands people is the website for Scottish BMD's and it is a pay per view site via purchase of credits

If he died from 1855 onwards - his parents names and mothers maiden name will be shown on his death cert.  The same info is available on a marriage cert from 1855 onwards

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

The 1901 census has nearly 47,000 entries for that name living in Dunbartonshire so we really need to narrow it down (eg ) what was his wife's name and the names and birthyears of any of their children

Please do not post details of anybody who may still be alive

Hi Thwarted and Carole

A v. old post on another info with some details on John Robertson http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ROBERTSON/1997-11/0880171091

Would be good to confirm and verify the details showing on there for yourself to make sure info is correct. Which of their children are you connected to? 1901 census is showing:

Alexander Robertson 35 Analytical Chemist b. Nitshill, Renfrew

Regarding occupations, likely John may show with a couple of different occupations. 1881, in Leveren, Eastwood Renfrewshire, shows him as:

John Robertson 39 Millboard Maker b. Perth, Perthshire
Elizebeth Robertson 45 b. England
Elizebth Robertson 16
Cathrin Robertson 15
Mary Robertson 13
John Robertson 10
Annie Robertson 7
Alexander Robertson 5
Euphemia Robertson 4
Beatrice Robertson 2
Agnes Currie 17 servant

By 1891, with a move to Roseneath, he shows as Asbestos Manufacturer.

Hi Monica,
Thanks for your reply, my connection to the family is via my grandfather Alexander Robertson, we have a copy of a letter requesting some hair restorer with a rather ringing endorsement of its benefits dated 1907 when he was living in Manchester, we had no idea that Alexander was a analytical chemist, he was a fruit grower in South Australia and passed away living with our family in 1948.

Thanks you to everyone who responded to my request, all of the information that has been provided is relevant to my family.
My connection is through my grandfather Alexander Robertson who passed away in Adelaide South Australia in 1948 and my father Alexander Robertson who passed away also in Adelaide in 1998.
You have given me a lot of leads to follow up. If I wanted to go back further than the 1841 census (which should include John's birthdate) where would I start looking?
Again many thanks for all your assistance.
