Name query?
« on: Friday 15 July 16 09:55 BST (UK) »
Can anyone answer a query I have, why would an ancestor have a former name especially a man?  He's named in a will as Alfred Arthur Williams formerly Arthur Edward Bull?
Many thanks

His mother may possibly have been married twice, and he took the name of the second husband - who would have been his stepfather?

Maybe  if his mother re-married when he was below the age of 16.

Adoption
Step parent
Illegitimate - registered in mother's name then assumed father's name later.
Just by choice

All sorts of reasons.

It doesn't happen too often, but there are cases of a man inheriting property on condition that they assume another surname, that of their wife or a benefactor, often to keep the surname alive. I doubt that this is the case here though as his forenames are different too.

Perhaps it was just an alias ...

Depending on dates, have you traced him and his family through the censuses - you might find a clue in who he is living with.

Hi Annie,

I'm not sure because I don't know where he was born only the year according to his marriage certificate.
