'Hamilton's Horse' India about 1860

Does anyone know what this is?  I can't find anything about it on the internet, but apparently my 2x great grandfather Archibald Hamilton Lawless born about 1813  "was the raiser in India of Hamilton's Horse, a force which made history in those troublous days".  We know he was in Ireland until 1855 so it must be after that.

What was Archibald's occupation? Was he in the military to be in India at that time?

The Indian Mutiny (or 1st Indian War of Independence) took place in 1857.
Thereafter, the cavalry regiments of the Bengal Army, Madras Army and Bombay Army (all part of the East India Company) were either disbanded, or transferred to the British Army.

Probably the most famous Cavalry Regiment was Skinner's Horse.

The 1st to 4th Bengal European Light Cavalry were transferred to the 19th, 20th and 21st Hussars.

'Google' keeps telling me it relates to the 5th Dragoon Guards, and I found this:

Hi Ruskie,

Archie has been a mystery for years.  He was born and raised in Wicklow, Ireland and we believe from his children's marriage certificates that he was in the Coastguards there.  The rest of the family came to England about 1870, but Archie isn't with them, and disappears off the face of the earth at that point.  We've been looking for him for about 7 years.  This is the first clue we have had. The quote comes from an obituary about his grandson (a Catholic priest) sent to me by the archivist at Jesuits In Britain.  I've e-mailed to ask what the book was.

There's a reference to an Archbold Lawless on the Irish genealogy site - at the wedding of Mary Jane Lawless to Thomas Thompson  (sorry for really long link).

In 1871 census, at St Andrews in Fife.

theres a record of an Archibald lawless in the William smith obrien petition 1848-49 in Wicklow asking for a stay of execution of the said William smith Obrien unfortunately the petioners names don't appear on the document download .
perhaps someone can find a different source this one is on FindMyPast .
apart from that cant find any other records for him using british irish and world .
