John and Amelia gilder (gelder) Beaconsfield
« on: Saturday 16 July 16 02:18 BST (UK) »
My grandfather, Arthur George Gilder B1899 was a son of Andrew Beverley Gilder and Eliabeth Smith.  Andrews parents were John and Amelia (nee Beverley) Gilder.  John and Amelia travelled to NZ aboard the Surat and were shipwrecked off The Caitlin's in 1874.  The captain was drunk and you can google The Surat shipwreck for further information. John and Amelia are buried in the Mataura cemetery in unmarked graves with few details.  Andrew and Elizabeth are buried in Gore Cemetary.  My grandfather A G Gilder (Jack) is buried in Mataura alongside my grandmother Jessie, Nee Coster, Gilder.  I found the Beaconsfield post but have been unable to re-find it again so thought I would post this.  I have a lot of information on my grandfathers family, the Gilders of Mataura and Gore.  Grandad was a cobbler but then truck and bus driver (hated the dung on the cockies boots) He then drove the tractor at the Mataura Freezing works shunting area until 70 or more.  They lived in Bristol Street in the house my grandmother, Jessie Coster was born in. They had 6 children and I am the oldest child of their oldest child, Georgina Jessie Gilder. My mother was born in 1918.  I have lots of family photos - one with Andrew and Elizabeth with their children.

When I first researched John and Amelia Gilder on this site it came up with the heading Beaconsfield so that is why I called it that.  Have been unable to find it again since registering.  There was a post on there which I wished to give the info that was missing ie year they emigrated to NZ.  My grandfather told me the story of The Surat and I bought the book of NZ Shipwrecks and read it for myself.

You stalking me Ros?  ;D ;D

Kay, did you use the search facility? At the top of the page you will see, Home, Forum, Help, Search. When you search for Gilder quite a few pop up.

Unfortunately, the original poster associated with the link, as given by Roz, has now passed on.

Thankyou for info in how to find the link.  Hopefully anyone can read my post above on it and take the info provided and dates etc.  This site gave me to dates born and died of John & Amelia as Cemetary records in Mataura have these as Unknown.  Andrew Beverley Gilder and his wife have a photo of their gravestone in Gore and there is also a photo of my grandfather,Arthur George Gilder's grave in Mataura Cemetary.  In papers past in that area there are news items about the Gilder's including the tragic story of a death in a pit from a shingle collapse.  I read a booklet about the Methodists a few days ago and John was mentioned in the beginnings of the meetings but not later, as they established themselves in Gore.  My aunt remembers the house in Redmond St where they lived formerly as it must have remained in the family for a good few years as she was born in 1932. There are Army records of my grandfathers brothers who went to war and his call up on 7/11/17 where he was failed for having flat feet.  He was 19 in the Oct before.  A cousin? killed is in the Roll of Honour on the Charlton School gates.  Google these days is a wonderful tool.

The Gilder remembered on the Charlton school gates was George Gilder who was killed at Ypres in Oct 1917 and son of John & Amelia and therefore uncle to my grandfather, who was Andrews son.

Hi Kay, are you sure John and Amelia Gilder were on the Surat? I’ve just been looking at another ancestor (other side of my family) who was on the Surat when it shipwrecked and noticed this page. I can’t see any Gilders or Gelders on the passenger list at all. Also the article in the Mataura Ensign reporting John’s death in 1895 suggests he landed in Bluff in 1877.

(I was excited for a bit there, thinking I had people on both sides of my family tree on that ship, lol)

I’m descended from John and Amelia via their daughter Annie who married George Crow. Annie and George’s oldest daughter, Amelia, was my great grandmother. If you’ve got any info on them (that you’re willing to share, of course), I’d be grateful. Just purchased John’s printouts for his death and second marriage.
