Where was John Hill born?
« on: Saturday 16 July 16 12:28 BST (UK) »
John Hill was living in Barnsley in 1851 with his wife Sarah and children. He was 53 and apparently born in Aston, Derbyshire. John's date of birth remains pretty consistent on all the records I have. The 1871 census also gives his place of birth as Aston. But the 1871 census gives his place of birth as Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

So where was he born? I've searched baptisms for John in Ashbourne but without success  >:(

Was John illiterate and would need help filling in the census form? If so maybe his helper misheard and put Ashbourne as it was the only similar sounding place in Derbyshire he had heard of. There is an Aston in High peak district Derbyshire. near to a village called Hope
Ancestry has a baptism of a John Hill on 17 Sep 1797 s/o Henry and Mary in Hope. A possibility as John named  a son Henry.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Thank you to both of you. I have searched for a baptism for John in Aston upon Trent but I can't see one anywhere. I might consider the possibility that LizzieL suggested but I'll check elsewhere just in case.  ;D

I found the 1797 baptism but the transcription says this John Hill was born in Sheffield... so maybe it isn't "my" John
