Warhurst/Patterson/Holmes
« on: Sunday 17 July 16 01:56 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish likely connection Lisa Warhurst born March Qtr 1954 Ashton under Lyne , her mother maiden name Holmes.
Baby Lisa buried Glossop 20 Mar 1954 same day same grave as Mary Patterson aged 66.
Can I assume they were related.

I don't think you can assume anything of the sort! ;D

I seem to remember that infants were buried in any convenient, open, grave?

Both were buried in a grave already containing some of my Wyatt family.( in the 1800s).
Baby Lisa buried Glossop 20 Mar 1954 same day same grave as Mary Patterson aged 66.
Would they have reopened the grave?

I would imagine that they simply reused the grave?

Grave no 1292 at Glossop Cemetery apparently contains/contained:
Ellen Wyatt, buried 3/10/1872
Joseph Wyatt, bur 9/12/1873
James Alexander Ross, bur 3/2/1885 (age unknown)
John Douglas Ross, bur 24/12/1889 (age 10 months)
Bruce Ross, bur 17/4/1891 (age 12 days)
Jane Wishart, bur 5/5/1898 (age 54)
Caleb Taylor, bur 2/11/1906 (age 86)
Mary Patterson, bur 20/3/1954 (age 66)
Lisa Warhurst, bur 20/3/1954 (age 45 minutes)

So either 3 or 4 infant deaths

Graves normally accommodate a maximum 3 people (due to the depth required), and a grave is normally purchased for a limited amount of time. You would need to read the Grave Deed to find out how long for.
Usually 99 years.

Currently there is a fee of £41.50 for Replacement or Transfer of a Grave Deed at Glossop.
And a fee of £616 for purchasing a new grave.

Now I am confused.
Ellen and Joseph Wyatt are my gggrandparents ( maternal).
Dorothy Charnock is their daughter.
The Greenwood infants are great grandchildren.
The others you quote are unknown to me.
Also my review of the burial site gives me:

Glossop   2154   03/10/1872   Ellen   Wyatt   73 yrs   C of E   1292
Glossop   2422   09/12/1873   Joseph   Wyatt   83 yrs   C of E   1292
Glossop   7455   28/03/1892   Dorothy   Charnoch   65 yrs   C of E   1292
Glossop   9154   20/07/1897   Heaton   Greenwood   12 mths   C of E   1292
Glossop   9232   30/10/1897   Malcom   Greenwood   1 mth   C of E   1292
Glossop   23003   20/03/1954   Mary   Patterson   66   C of E   1292
Glossop   23004   20/03/1954   Lisa   Warhurst   45 mins   C of E   1292
Note they are all C of E whereas Ross , Wishart and Taylor are FC Grave No. 1292

I have been able to identify "extras" in other Wyatt graves as being related. That is why I was trying to identify Patterson and Warhurst.

I suppose it is still possible they are both strays.

Thanks
Rex

If you live near enough, I would suggest that you make a personal visit to the cemetery.     Look at the headstones  or ask the admin  staff for advice.

If your family purchased the grave, how long was the term?
These days, Graves are purchased for 75 or 99 years.
A 75 year term from the date of the first burial would only last until 1947?

Meaning that the grave was free to be re-used from that date.

But what would happen to any existing headstone?

Sorry. I live on the other side of the world ( Australia).
The first burial was 1872 so a 75 year term would have lasted until 1947.
The burials I am querying were 1954.I am not aware of a monument on this grave.
