Hughes family from Milltownpass(?)
« on: Tuesday 19 July 16 15:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,  I'm just starting to research my Irish grandparents, and think I have found a relevant 1911 census entry for the Hughes family in Milltownpass.  Any information about the place or the people would be most welcome.  In particular, the head of household (and my great grandfather) is John Hughes and his wife is Mary.  I have no maiden name for Mary, but think there are some connections to Quinn.  Any help or hints please?

Hi and welcome to Roots Chat.

The 1911 census tells you how long the couple have been married (this is the only census which has this useful information).

You could try searching the parish registers for the baptisms of their children - which will (usually in Ireland) give the mother's maiden name.
If you subscribe to Ancestry, Find My Past or Roots Ireland -- there are Irish Parish registers on those sites. For a free site try Family Search (the Ireland section).

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list/?page=1&countryId=1927084

Once you find a child, (preferably children) --- and have the maiden name -- you can then search for a marriage.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

That family seems to be

John HUGHES and Mary MITCHEL(L)

1 Margaret bap. Dec 17 1879 Kinnegad LINK to baptism
2 Mary Anne bap. May 14 1881  Kinnegad
3 Elizabeth bap. Oct 11 1882 Kinnegad
4 William bap. Dec 03 1883 Kinnegad
5 Bridget bap. Apr 08 1885 Kinnegad
6 Patrick bap. Dec 29 1886 Kinnegad
7 John b.c1888

Unfortunately the baptism records free online stop at 1881
There are matching births however in the civil district of Mullingar if you go through with years or search by given nameLINK

There is a death in 1882 for a Lizzie Hughes which may be the child that died

I cannot see any record of Margaret other than baptism
However either Margaret or Elizabeth could be the deceased child as neither are listed on the census returns

It seems we are researching the same John Hughes & Mary Mitchell.  I cannot on any site find either their birth or marriage certificates and I have come to a halt.  If you have had any success, would you let me know?  My research so far has yielded the following results:
1901 census says John Hughes was 47 y.o. (no birth available) with wife, Mary (formerly Mitchell), age 50, and five children, Mary, William, Bridget, Patrick and John (see below).
1911
Occupants in Rattin were John, 58  (died 1/19/1938) , and his wife, Mary, age 60 (died 7/12/1914).  They had four children:  Mary Anne (born 5/12/1881, baptized 5/14/1881), age 28, William (born 12/8/1883), age 26, Bridget 24 (born 4/18/1885; died June 15, 1961) and John (born 5/28/1888), age 22.
Patrick, who was 14 in 1901, does not appear in the 1911 census.

William was my husband's grandfather.  My husband's father was also named William but I cannot find a birth certificate.  In any event, this William married Elizabeth Farrell, age 27 on January 24, 1917 (her father’s name was John Farrell; she was born sometime between 1889-1890 and was listed as a housekeeper in the census on January 24, 1917.  She died 8/23/1965 of heart failure/endocarditis.
William and Elizabeth Hughes had 7 children (could not locate birth records):
John (Sean) possibly born 7/9/12; died 11/2/1992) ; William (Billy) (died 11/22/1992); Thomas; Kevin; Maura; Peter Brendan (born 1/20 or 1/25/1927; and Elizabeth (who died 5/18/1942 at age 13 of same condition as mother had.) (No recorded birth)

If you have any further info, I would appreciate it.  Very hard to trace back since it seems most of the Hughes were named John, William, Mary or Elizabeth.
