FreeBMD has the death registration!

Deaths, March qtr 1973
Stoke on Trent Registration District     vol 9b, page 1633

Cunningham, Michael John   DoB: 13th May 1909
Cunningham, Michael Joseph    DoB: 1st May 1909

Looks like 1 entry may be a correction of the other? ;)

Birmingham & Midlands Family History Society has an online Staffordshire Burials Index - but he isn't on there? ::)

Maybe contact Stoke Upon Trent council?

Without information from a friend of family member this will be difficult

He could have been buried anywhere even back in Ireland wouldn't be unusual

If you have his death certificate you could contact the Funeral Directors in the area in the hope they have good records. If he died in hospital or some institution their records may hold some information and of course if there was a newspaper notice.
