Arthur Tomlinson of Hull
« on: Saturday 23 July 16 21:02 BST (UK) »

Could anyone please help me find out what happened to my great grandfather, born 1866 in Hull.  His first wife died age 23 leaving Maria, John and Eveline (my grandmother). He remarried in 1897 to Mary Hart and had 3 further children. At the time of the 1911 census, Mary and the 2 surviving younger children were in the workhouse. I cannot find any information about why this happened, no 1911 census with him on and no death certificate.  I do have a photograph of a man who I assume is him, with Maria and Eveline in their late teens, so well after the time of the 1911 census.  However this man could possibly be Evelines uncle, who took in the 3 children Arthur had with Maria after her early death and then again when they were in their teens.   Thank you

Welcome to Rootschat. Does Mary say she is widowed in 1911?

Just a thought if he was a fisherman he could either be at sea in 1911 or perhaps died at sea and that is why the family are in the workhouse.

I can't see that - which 2 children were they?  I see Una Olive died before 1911.

Do you know what happened to Mary Louisa?  Did she die as a widow?

You could also check the 1939 register for any possible Arthur T in case he was still alive.

Dear Milliepede and Groom
Thank you for your interest and help.
At the 1901 census Mary was married, Lily Hart in the household was her younger sister. Her 3 children were Una Olive (2/4/1899 to 24/12/1904) Mary Jane (dob 1900) and George Samuel (dob 14/10/1903) who were in a children's home attached to the Hull workhouse at the time of the 1911 census.  Incidentally Georges birth certificate states he is a girl, but he did marry a woman and have children.    I think it most likely that as a fisherman Arthur was lost at sea, but would have expected to find some record of this somewhere.  I do not have Mary's death certificate to know if she died a widow.   What is the 1939 register?

Here is a link to the 39 Register: http://www.findmypast.com.au/1939register

There was no Arthur with the birthdate you gave.
