No, this is a major operating system update, it reinstalls Windows 10 to the latest version. It has just taken 3 hours to complete!  It also resets your settings again :-\

It's just like installing Windows 10 all over again!

It's added Cortana, for those of us in the UK who didn't get it first time round and something called smart screen which stops unrecognised apps running and files being downloaded from the internet

Smartscreen exists in IE11 under Win7, I've had it activated for some time.

I never activated it and I can't remember if it came with the first version of Windows 10. Probably one of the things I didn't activate from word go.

My OH updated his windows 7 desktop pc to Windows 10 not long after the free upgrade became available last year. Then Windows 10 did a major update a few days ago and has totally destroyed his pc. All he gets is the HP (it's a Hewlett Packard PC) repair screen, with all options greyed out except to restore original factory settings. This has the warning that it will delete all programmes he has installed and all files he has saved.
There doesn't seem to be any way to get any other screen. As it boots up there is a message to press Esc to change settings. But pressing Esc has no effect and it goes back to the repair screen.
Looks like we will have to get someone to get all the recent files off hard drive since he last backed up onto external drive and buy a new PC.

My IT son says you need a Windows recovery programme which you can make from any Win10 machine.
Put a USB into pc (4gig should be fine) Use one that you don't mind losing the data on)
CLick on start, settings, in box that pops up there there is search place, type recovery into the box and one of the options should be "create a recovery drive" click it and where it says do you want to allow this app to make changes say "yes".

Another window will pop up saying "create a recovery drive".   Untick box that says back up system files.  Click  "next", will give you option of which USB to use, should only be the one. Click "next" and follow prompts.

Once it is created, plug USB in faulty pc and boot off the USB,  there will be different options, one which will be "system restore"  it will restore your pc to a point previous to the crash, pc should be fine after that, data intact.  Only do System Restore, and restore to point prior to crash.

Should always have one handy, F8 to enter into safe mode apparently doesn't work on W8 and W10 because they boot too quickly.

This instruction typed as told so hope it works...
