Got in touch with Find my Past and after a bit of dithering they have stated that they do not have on line the Register of Deceased Seamen for the period 1929-1932 (BT334/89) and 1933-1936 (BT334/92)

This means that FindMyPast have not copied the documents correctly or they have been lost by TNA. (they are catalogued see link above)
I should be at the National Archives sometime in August and will attempt to take a look at the Deaths at Sea Register's to see if there are any clues to link any of the "J Carney's" listed to Joan's ancestor.
