Death at Sea Records
« on: Sunday 24 July 16 21:01 BST (UK) »
According to my relatives, one of our ancestors died on a ocean vessel.  He traveled frequently from Belfast to the east coast in the early 1900's as an employee.  Is there a place I can search for deaths at sea?  I have been unable to recover his date of death or cause.  Thank you.

Dear t mo,

How very kind of you to offer to look for him.  Thank you.

Here is his information:

John “Jack” Carney

DOB:     15 May 1899
Place:   Belfast, Ireland
Parents:   Alfred Hamilton Carney
      Margaret Crawford

Family stories hold that Jack stowed away on a ship and when the ship was later fumigated he died.  However, given my research, Jack was employed, like his father, on several ships as an employee, not a stowaway.  The friend shown on the ship's manifest (Louis Carney) was my grandfather.

My research shows him alive as late as 1923:

Name   John Carney
Gender   Male
Age   24
Nationality:    Irish
Birth Date:     abt 1899
Birth Place:   Belfast, Ireland
Departure Place   Liverpool, England
Arrival Date   2 Sep 1923
Arrival Place   Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Last Residence   Ireland
Friend           Louis Carney
Ship                   Celtic

Oh my goodness Trevor!  You found a record with a picture of him?  If so, can you send it to me?  It may be him.  He and his father (Alfred) were both ship stewards.  Thanks for your help and looking forward to hearing what Seaweed has to say.  -- I cannot being to tell you how much your help means.
