Help with the meaning of a word
« on: Monday 25 July 16 11:47 BST (UK) »
Hi everbody.  I have found two separate birth registraions on Scotlands People that have the name (Ellen) entered after the mother's maiden surname (which by the way was her mother's maiden surname).  Can anybody tell me what this means please?

Many thanks

Welcome to Rootschat

I'm not sure I understand which word it is you want help with.  Mother's maiden surname should be stated.  Was Ellen the mother's maiden surname or was it something else?

Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Thanks for your reply.  Sorry, I should have been a bit more precise.  The mother's maiden name was stated as Main and then in brackets afterwards was the word (Ellen) on both birth records.

Can you post a clip of that part of the SP image ?

Hi Winpin and welcome to Rootschat.

You'll find this a very friendly and helpful site, so well done on finding us.

I still don't understand your query though.

Under "mother's maiden name", does it say Main (Ellen)?
And was Ellen the grandmother's maiden name?

Mike

Perhaps she was illegitimate and registered under her mother's surname as Ellen. Main may have been the surname of her reputed father or perhaps her stepfather if her mother subsequently married.

No, she wasn't illegitimate.  Her mother's maiden surname was Main.  I don't know where my last reply went but I'll attach her birth registration again!

Could it mean that she was known as Ellen, but now as Isabella?

Or was she previously married with having the surname Ellen?

Hmm, she could have been I suppose.  I think it needs a little more delving.

Thanks for everybody's help.
