Joseph Platt born c 1849 Manchester
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 11:05 BST (UK) »
Hi, I've not made much progress with Joseph since I last posted some seven year ago, so here goes again.  If anyone can help, I'd much appreciate it.

Emma Platt was my husband's great grandmother.  She was born in 1885 in Hulme.  She married Robert Fouchard in 1907 in St George's, Hulme (her marriage certificate shows her father as Joseph Platt, deceased).  In the 1911 census, Robert, Emma and their son Robert were visitors to Margaret Ann Platt aged 69, a widow in Hulme.

In the 1901 census, Margaret Ann Platt was aged 59 and a widow.  Living with her was Margaret Ann Burton, born 1873 in Liverpool, Emma Platt, born 1885 in Manchester (sic), Alfred Burton, son in law, Elizabeth Burton, granddaughter and Harold Burton, grandson.

In the 1891 census, Emma with living in Hulme with her widowed mother Margaret Platt and Margaret A and Elizabeth, two sisters and John Vernon a boarder.

All good so far.

In the 1881 census, I have Joseph Platt, born c1850 Manchester a cornmill labourer, his wife Margaret Ann Vernon, b1841 Manchester, with two daughters, Margaret Ann, born c1874 Liverpool and Elizabeth Alice, born c1877 Liverpool.

I can't find Joseph in the 1871 or Margaret Ann.  In the 1861 census, Margaret is living with her husband John Leigh and three children.  John died in 1869 in Whiston Workhouse.

I can't find a marriage for Joseph Platt and I'm unsure about a birth.  The 1881 census is the only one I can find Joseph Platt in.  I have a possible birth in 1849 in Manchester to Joseph and Anne.  Joseph is a weaver but I can't find his marriage to Anne.

So, any help on finding any censuses for Joseph and a link to his parents, Joseph and Ann.  Did Joseph marry Margaret Ann Vernon/Leigh?

Sorry, it's a bit lengthy, but I'm trying to work backwards and trying to show the connection going up from the facts we know.  Thanks for reading.

Have you seen the baptism record of Margaret Ann Platt (bn 29 Aug 1873, bap 12 Oct 1873 at St Peter's, Liverpool)?  Address is given as Portland Street - have you looked along Portland Street in the 1871 census to see if you can pick up any clues?

What happened to the children who were with John and Margaret on the 1861 census?

I did have a quick look through your two previous threads, and couldn't see this bit mentioned (but apologies if I am repeating things!)  On the baptism register for Hulme St George, on July 6th 1862 you have John Henry Leigh, Sarah Ann Leigh and James Mills all baptised with mother's maiden names given as Vernon (so Margaret Vernon for the first two, and Sarah Vernon for James).  However three baptisms earlier there was a baptism for Mary Ellen Greaves to Thomas and Martha Greaves of 19 Ogden Street.  It looks like Martha's maiden name was Vernon too (and they were also married at the cathedral)

Doesn't really help in the hunt for Joseph, but I didn't know if you had seen that already.

There is a Joseph Platt living at 38 Bengall Street, Manchester as a lodger age 22.  Occupation is given as factory operative.

Appears to have been born in Manchester.  It looks as though the enumerator has used a shortened form of Manchester.

Perhaps someone else could check this as well.  1871 census Piece No. 4029, folio 45, pg 13

I have found another Joseph Platt as a general domestic servant, age 22, born in Manchester and residing in Police Street.  1871 census Piece No. 4046, folio 112, pg 16

Does Emma Platt's marriage certificate mention her father's occupation?

Feeling pretty inadequate here ...

Can't work out how to use a card catalogue for St Peter's, Liverpool.

Can't find either of the Leigh children in the 1871.

Girl Guide,

Emma's marriage shows her father as a labourer but it doesn't state him as deceased whereas her husband, Robert Fouchard's father Thomas is deceased.  The marriage took place in 1907 and we believe Joseph, her father, died in 1890 ...
