PAF files and gedcom
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 14:04 BST (UK) »
Not sure if this is the correct forum, however......

I have a large family file on the now obsolete PAF, and I can't seem to export it.   What do I do?
I also want to split one family off and separate it from everyone else, is this possible.

don't know where to put it, did think Ancestral Quest, but that wants some dollars to open up.   Need something closely resembling PAF  really, but just at the moment want to save everything.
Can I save it to a memory stick?

Hi Silvery,

The free version of Legacy Family Tree will open the PAF file / database directly I think the free version of Rootsmagic will aswell.

Sorry, but don't know how you would split the families once opened in the other programs as I have never done that  :(

I transferred my 3 PAF trees to Rootsmagic a couple of weeks back, all seems fine so far.
At least I can open them now!

The PAF's may be obsolete, but there is no reason for it not to work. Many people continue to use it successfully.

Why can't you export it? what happens when you try?

It is an easy procedure to save a part of a tree, but without knowing why you can't export, you can't do it anyway, as it is done during the export set up.

Thank everyone, I have now got the files on Legacy.
I really like PAF so will continue to use it.   It does everything that I want.   Trouble with the newer FH programmes is they want quite a bit of money to open more than about 4 generations.   It wasn't costly with PAF.

Think?

If it is already obsolete then why risk losing your data completely?

Export the data to a ( 1 or more ) feasible file type ?

Is your only consideration a small amount of money?

There is no risk of losing your data by continuing to use PAF, unless the posters machine dies and they have not backed up their file to an external device, as I am sure they would have.
