The Family of David Wallace & Ann Greig in 1841
« on: Saturday 30 July 16 13:57 BST (UK) »
My great grandmother Mary Wallace is living with her family in Oathlaw, Angus in the 1841 Census as follows:-
Surname   First Name          Age   Occupation      Where born
Wallace    David        35   Ag Lab          Angus
Greig      Ann              35                Angus
Wallace   Ann              10                Angus
Wallace   Alexander            7                Angus
Wallace   Mary               6                Angus
Wallace    Robert       2                Angus
I am keen to find out what happened to any of her siblings; Ann, Alexander and Robert who for some reason do not appear with their parents in the 1851 Census.
Can anybody help me in this quest?
Regards

Ann may have married by 1851 so I would check for a possible marriage.

One or more could sadly have passed away so check for deaths between 1841-1851 just in case.

Is Mary with her parents in 1851 or are they on their own with no children?

Note the 3 younger children are all down as "Walline" on ancestry.

Hi Milliepede & robo196
Thanks for your response to my query. In reply
1. Yes, only Mary is with her parents in the 1851 Census.
2. That looks like a very good bet for Ann Wallace in the 1861 Census. She is the only child with a birth record and it states that she was born in Maryton by Montrose, Forfarshire. Unfortunately you don't state the location of your various census entries
3. Where in Ancestry does it show the 3 younger children as "Walline"?
4. I have looked for marriages and deaths for all of them but have had no success largely because their names are so common in Scotland

Ann Wallace married James McBride in Aberdeen area in 1867 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTJ7-73N

This is them I think in 1871:

James McBride 40 Railway [Poctor?...likely Porter] b. Ireland
Ann McBride 38 b. Maryton, Forfarshire

Address: 3 Fishcross St, Fraserburgh Aberdeenshire

No children from the marriage I would say. They have moved to Aberdeen by 1881. Possible death for Ann in 1914 in the Aberdeen City area.

Given the age of Robert (2) in 1841, you would think he would still be with parents in 1851 (although some could be out of the home working by then. Can't easily see anything for him though in 1851.

Mary is your line isn't she? Where was she born, from later census entries? Might help with some clues on birth place for Alexander given they were close in age.

In the 1851, the only possible entry I can see so far for Alexander is this one:

Alexander Wallace, 17, Shoemaker (app), b. Fearn, Forfar
Address: Market Square, Fettercairn, Kincardineshire

Maybe a family to keep a note of...Robert Wallace and his wife Mary have a wee boy called Robert the same age as David and Ann's son. In 1841 this family can be found living Logie Pert but the couple are from Kincardineshire originally - Mary's from Marykirk the same place as Ann Greig. It's just they have an apprentice with them by the name of Alexander Greig age 15 seems a bit of a coincidence.

Hi All
Thanks for your help. In reply
1. Ann Wallace did marry James McBride in 1867 and did die in Aberdeen in 1914 but sadly in the Royal Asylum. I took a gamble and purchased both records. Well done MonicaL
2. The Alexander Wallace aged 17 in Fettercairn in the 1851 Census could also be our man. He claims to be born in Fern, Forfarshire which is where my great grandmother Mary Wallace also claims she was born.
3. The Wallace family in Logie Pert in 1841 Census bear some striking similarities. However I am not sure if there is any connection although Robert Senr could be a brother of my David's
