George Reginald Lewis
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 01:13 BST (UK) »
Searching for immigration & death records of George Reginald  Lewis baptized March 15 1875 at St.Marks, Kennington, London. Parents were Joseph & Fanny Lewis.Married Alberta Minerds 1898.Think he was a merchant seaman.Last appears there 1912 Electorial roll.Had a daughter ab. 1914 but she had no childhood memories of him, must have left a couple years later for Australia to set up a home for his family, later returned to London to collect them but they refused to go, so he made the return trip back without them. The family never heard from him again. Can't find any helpful records in records in Aust.  Could it be possible he travelled to New Zealand via Australia  and  his children not being told the whole truth . I would be most grateful for any information.
Kind Regards
Gaye

The family is on the 1901 census RG13, piece 23, folio 180, page 49
Kensington Town
G. Reginald Lewis 27 bicycle maker born Kennington
Alberta 23

Charles 2 months?

The 1911 census does not have G R with his wife and 4 children.
The second daughter's birth  was registered March 1/4 1913. From FreeBMD

"Can't find any helpful records in records in Aust"

Could you say where you have looked, please?

Where in Australia was he?

Are you saying he was living in NZ? Could it be possible he travelled to New Zealand via Australia

I can't see anything definite for G R in Oz or NZ using both his first and middle name alone or together.
I will just mention that there is a Reginald Lewis of the right age  living in Feltham in 1911. Not too far from where his wife and children were living.
For the details you would have to buy some credits.
Is it possible the children were told a 'story' to cover up the breakdown of the marriage?

There's a George R on the 39 register, at Islington.

Had a daughter ab. 1914

Her birth was registered in the first quarter 1913

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Last appears there 1912 Electorial roll

How have you identified that person as your George?  Is Alberta at the same address?  From memory, UK electoral rolls do not list occupation.  Do you have any of the children's birth certs to confirm his occupation in the years around 1911?

Debra  :)

I searched records from Familysearch.org. It tells me that  a George Reginald Lewis immigrated from London 13th March 1911 to Lytteton & other ports this may account for him not listed as living with his wife Aberta in 1911 English Census.
It also said  G R lewis was  a  UK merchant seaman  from  London. More immigration details suggests that he made  trips to & from  London. His two sisters had immigrated  to Oz.  One was Louise , Louise Smith(married  name Smith) had lived in New Zealand  1902 but returned to Tasmania about 1908 . There was family talk that Louise had seen him off on a ship and that may have been whilst she lived in Tas. during the war years, but none of this I can be sure of. I am helping his gggrandaughter to try and solve this mystery & all your help is much appreciated.

Don't know if you have, but came across marriage notice, 1903, for Louise Lewis, in Tasmania:

Also, an In Memorium for Joseph Lewis who died in WW1, inserted by his two sisters, Mrs Francis Smith and Mrs Martin Smith.

Possible marriage of a daughter of Louise and Francis, Rhonda Valentine Smith.

London 13th March 1911 to Lytteton

Are you referring to Lyttelton, Port of Christchurch, NZ?

I'm a bit confused by the follow: George Reginald Lewis immigrated from London 13th March 1911 to Lytteton & other ports

I am of the belief that 'immigrate' means to go to live in another country - could I be wrong - so the addition of '& other ports' makes be think you are meaning as a merchant seaman he was stopping off in different ports of call. Am I understanding this correctly?

What you have found on Joseph, Louise&Frances daughter Rhonda Valentine is  all correct thx. Yes I meant Lytteton Christchurch.Should i have said emmigrated from London, sorry gets confusing but visiting on a ship doesn't mean that he actually lived there  does it?.  I am hoping he settled there later in his life & died there.Yes to last question (ie other ports)that is what makes me think he was a merchant seaman still waiting for confirmation on this from daughter Doris' birth cert.
