NEWEY - Are Thomas and Martha bro and sis?!
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 03:28 BST (UK) »
Hi team

Just wondering if anyone is able to check if there are baptisms for Thomas NEWEY bc.1797 and Martha NEWEY bc.1798.  Both states they were born in Leicestershire, but I don't know where.  Both were married in August 1822 at St. Margaret's Leicester.

I'm wondering if they are brother and sister?!

In censuses, Martha says she's born in Cossington, but Thomas died in 1842.

TIA, bitzar.

Thanks Bunnygirl

BUT, this makes me even more curious as Thomas had a son, Samuel!

Two topics *you might not have seen on some Leicestershire Newey's . Most Newey's though seem to have originated in the Birmingham area, so might be worth checking there too

More likely that they might be cousins

Actually, looking more closely, they both have sons named Samuel!  Plus they were married in the same church.

So far my Newey's are strictly Leicestershire.  I have seen that there are some families in other counties.

sallyyorks, the other 2 threads you mention are my family.  William the exile is the eldest son of Thomas and Mary.  The Thomas is the one I'm questioning now as bro of Martha.

Many thanks,

Bitzar

Not sure if you have this, but according to my transcript Thomas & Mary were married in the presence of Martha Newey.

Cant find anything to connect them as brother & sister, but there is a bastardy record from the quarter session books relating to Martha Newey of Cossington & Matthew Collins (parish not stated).

11 Oct 1819 (Michaelmas) - Continuance
10 Jan 1820 (Epiphany) - X (it is uncertain what this means)

Jomot

I also love your work!  What does 'Michaelmas' refer to?!  Excuse my ignorance!!!  When I goog*d it, it is the feast of St. Michael, 29th September.  Maybe this is when the child was born.  So in short, Martha is claiming maintenance or acknowledgment that her illegitimate child's father is Matthew Collins?!  I wish I could have an 'epiphany' and work this Newey lot out!

Sooooooooooooooooooo, if Martha was present at Thomas and Mary's nuptual's then the likelihood of her being a CLOSE relation to Thomas is strong.... Given the facts they were both born in Leicestershire, both married at the same church, both had son's Samuel!  Am I grasping too much at straws?!

so many thanks to all
