Mary Ann HAYTER
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 04:39 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find detail on the family (parents and siblings) of Mary Ann HAYTER who married Matthew HABENS in 1834. I imagine that she was probably born around 1810 or so given the marriage date. Mary Ann and Matthew's son was William James HABENS (1839-1899) http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/2h1/habens-william-james

My paternal grandfather's name was Frederick Willian Habens STEWART and FWH Stewart's grandmother was Joanna HAYTER (dob unknown but likely around 1800-1810). I am thinking there may be a family connection particularly as my grandfather moved for a short time from Australia to New Zealand very soon after William HABENS' death. Any help with the HAYTER connection would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what you are looking for.

I did a net search and one site says Mary: Born: 1807 at: Lymington, Hampshire, England

Matthew's folks: Alexander and Francis Boxall. Born 7 July 1811, Gosport, Hampshire.

Marriage: 22 April, Alverstoke, Hampshire.

On the '61 census there is Mary, Matthew and Son William aged 14. Father's occupation is shopkeeper, boot and shoe. Says he was born in Forton and Mary in Lymington, son in Brighton, where they are living at time of census.

Same for the '71 minus William.

Christening for same parents 10 May 1835 for a Frederick, Alverstoke, Hampshire.

Is this Joanna's marriage? James Stewart to Joanna Hayter, 19 Feb 1828
St. Mary's Church, Portsea, Hampshire, England

On the '41, Alexander and Frances are at Alverstoke with a family of surname Fryer.

Thank you Jamjar & chempat. It looks like Habens and Harlen in the '41 and '51 censuses are the same family. I know many names were very common but the fact that Mary Ann had a daughter with a middle name of Joanna might indicate she was named after an aunt perhaps? If I can tie in Joanna HAYTER with Mary Ann HABENS (nee Hayter) that would be great.

Yes, Jamjar, Joanna HAYTER did marry James STEWART in Feb 1828. Thanks again.

Yes, one gets a feeling there's a connection. I'm sure when more folk get onto it and answer will be found.
