Browning family
« on: Monday 01 August 16 00:25 BST (UK) »
Been looking into my family history, mainly wanna find out military history but I have hit a dead end to all my searching. Names seem to be coming up blank, and all I have is names and dates of birth. So this is not getting me very far, as I have no documents of war, my Nans side of the family is huge and I wouldn't even know who had what or how to get in touch so I have started from scratch just using ancestry.
This link is to photos of great uncles, great great uncles and great grandad in war uniforms >>  https://flickr.com/photos/143982241@N05/sets/72157668834737854 there is also a family tree image included in these photos.
Thank you for any help
Chloe R
(I can not attach images via my iPad so I have had to create albums on Flickr, if you wish to upload them for me feel free)

Hello
Looking at some of your photos it seems you are after service records for WW11. You will not find any of these online as they are still held by the MoD.
You can order them but you will need a death certificate for each person and 30 pounds for each one.
This link tells you who can order and what information you will get. It also has the application forms to download.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

If you are searching for WW1 service records these are available on ancestry and Findmypast both of which are pay per view sites but your local library may have the free version of one or both.
However be aware that 60 % plus of WW1 service records were destroyed in WW11 by bombing/fire and water damage.
Records that do survive are the Medal Roll Index Cards and the Medal and Award rolls. These will give you the regiment/battalion and regiment numbers and medals awarded but no personal information. So it may be very difficult identifying those with common names.

If you know that relatives died during wars, then the Commonwealth Graves Commission can have bits of information http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx

Thank you, i was really hoping somewhere online had ww2 records, as I don't have a lot of information about my Great Great uncles. I'm might try ordering from the mod for my great grandad, just £30 is a bit steep  :(

Hi Alders
I am intrigued by you being able to access your grandfather's service record on TNA.
The National Archives site says " The National Archives does not hold army service records for the Second World War. They are still with the Ministry of Defence.
This is their research guide here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/british-army-officers-after-1913/

Hi Alders
Thanks for letting us know which records you accessed at TNA.  My brain is mush at the moment so I could have been easily persuaded it was  me who had it wrong.
