Number unclear on index scan
« on: Tuesday 02 August 16 15:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I was hoping someone here could help me.

A friend wants his original birth certificate. I said I'd try to help.
I found the entry on free BMD. However the page number is not clear.

The entry has been amended, and the original page number has been crossed out in such a way that the last two digits are unclear. Also the handwriting on the amended number is a little unclear.
He wants to get the original certificate, (before the amendment), but it would be good to know the correct number for both.

Are there other copies of the index that might be clearer, or do all sources use the same scan?

Thanks for reading this. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

On that same page you have linked to up above the scan it says:

That is as I thought it was when looking at the scan.

It also says: #COMMENT handwritten amendment of crossed out page number 173_

Your friend could always order it direct from oxfordshire so he wouldn`t need the GRO references.

Your friend will most probably have to order it from the GRO by telephone as it won't be more than 50 years until the end of September in which case the volume and page number maybe irrelevant

www.gro.gov.uk

tel 0300 123 1837

same most probably applies to local register offices who always charge more then the GRO and may add extra postage

and I've just re-read your opening post, the GRO will not supply the certificate for the 'original' entry as that has been legally superseded by the later entry. Same should apply to the local register office.
