Cheverton of Newchurch and Brading
« on: Wednesday 03 August 16 08:13 BST (UK) »
After many years of searching I have finally confirmed a family legend of a connection to the Isle of Wight :)  I have no knowledge of how the record situation for this area works - no idea where best to look.

I  have tracked them back to James Chiverton/Cheverton born 1742 to John and Grace in Newchurch.
1728 5 Sep John Cheverton married Grace White Brading.

I  have also come up with a will at the TNA Kew for a Grace Cheverton widow of Brading - not sure if it is too late to be the same Grace

Reference:   IR 26/412/13 - Abstract of Will of Grace Cheverton, Widow of Artingshote Farm in the parish of Brading Isle of Wight, Hampshire. Proved in the Court of Winchester January 30 1796

Any hints or advice as the best way to track down this family without having to travel gratefully accepted.

Julie

thanks - I found that - but sadly it seems to be just post 1837
"Note : Prior to July 1837, Parish Registers (which are NOT indexed in this system, and which are held by the County Record Office) were used to record Baptisms, Marriages and Burials."

There are searchable indexes of parish transcripts which can only be accessed by members :

The Isle of Wight Record Office offers a research service , with an initial free search :

scroll down for details of free and paid searches.

Quite a lot of results for Cheverton on the Hampshire Record Office website :

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives

You can order a paper copy of any wills which look interesting for £6.

I think we are related. Here is a link going back to 1700. You will see we go back to newchurch and brading. https://fhhighfields.files.wordpress.com/2019/02/cheverton.pdf
