Help please ! I have traced my great grandfather James Hine to his birth in Leigh Lancashire in 1860 but cannot find any trace of his parents or siblings . Is there a way of finding documentation of his birth?
I would appreciate any help. Thanks Roz

Can't see James at the moment but did find this if it's of any interest:
Baptism: 17 Jan 1880 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England
John Hine - Son of James Hine & Annie
Abode: Pennington
Occupation: Boatman

I can only see his marriage:
Dec 1879  Leigh  8c 262
Hine  James
OAKES  Annie

I can see 1 Bp. Manchester to William & Jane b. 8/3/1857.
You may have to get the above marriage.

Welcome to Rootschat.
Have you found his birth in civil records or just in the censuses? You could get his marriage details to find out his father's name.

I can see James Hine and wife Ann on the 1881 census
RG11 3523 50 21

Is this the same family in 1891 ?

James Hine 29 barge boatman canal Pennington, Lancs
Annie Hine 27
Elizabeth Hine 8
Mary Jane Hine 7
Charlotte Hine 5
Herbert Hine 0
Catherine Oaks sister in law 36
etc

If this is the correct family James Hine probably married Annie OAKS and there is this marriage
James Hine and Annie Oakes or Mary Harrison,  Leigh , Lancs  4 1879 8c 262

Would he have been working the Leeds and Liverpool Canal?  If so, this website/family history society might be of interest http://www.boatfamilies.website/

It seems son John died in infancy - his birth and death are registered Jan/Feb/Mar quarter 1880 Leigh

Son Gearge 1month old on 1881 census died age 6

You can search FreeBMD for registrations and can purchase certificates online from GRO
However I cannot find birth reg for James 1860 in Leigh reg district

Marriage cert would give father's name and occupation -unless of course james was illegit

His age varies
1881 ihe is (smudged) 21 1891 he is 29

according to marriage reg his wife was Annie Oakes
1891 census has Catherine Oakes described as sister in law land her children living with them
Also Catherine Smith  mother in law age 71 is with them

On the 1891 census, Catherine Oaks is described as married (which may be incorrect, natch) but might also mean that the relationship is not as straightforward as the sister of James' wife.

On 1881 census Catherine and George Oakes (described as daughter and son in law) are living with Catherine Smith at 9 Hills House RG11; Piece: 3807; Folio: 77; Page: 20;

ETA - George Oakes married Catherine Smith dec qtr 1877, Leigh 8c 290

think relationships are a little muddled in 1891
Catherine Oakes (nee Smith) was married to Annie's brother George Drummond Oakes
Catherine Smith age 71 described as mother in law - is Catherine Oakes mother

so no family link to James Hine there
