JEREMIAH CONNOR Ayton Berwickshire
« on: Saturday 06 August 16 21:45 BST (UK) »
I've traced Jeremiah Connor in the 1841 census, in Ayton as Boatman in the Coastguard Service with his wife Catherine and 5 children. Jeremiah and his wife declare place  of birth as Ireland. However their first born was John Connor born 1830 Berwickshire. I have been looking to see if they married in Scotland but cannot find any trace.
Also Coastguards were oftern recruited from Navy personnel. So did Jeremiah serve in the Royal Navy?
Can anyone assist with Jeremiah's marriage to Catherin and whether Jeremiah was in the Navy?
Many thanks

Can I suggest that you use the ADM 175 Coastguard Establishment Books, available as free downloads from the National Archives, to trace your mans career. I've had a quick look at ADM 175/1 (pdf 208) and there is a Jeremiah Connor nominated to the CG Service in 1821, place from whence he came Longate, Peterhead; first posting Westhaven, Scotland. This suggest to me that he did not have any prior naval service.

Another source of information are the Merchant Seamen's Records on Find my Past, despite the title of these records many include CGs and men in the RN. I have looked at the index and there is a likely man born 1796. Sometimes you can get lucky and these records include an actual date and place of birth, but all have a physical description.

Although all these records contain no family information it may help to establish localities for further searches.
