Accessing Swiss Birth Records
« on: Monday 08 August 16 22:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the birth records of Aime Matile born in Switzerland in 1882. His father’s name is Numa and he was born either in Vevey, Vaud or La Sagne, Neuchatel. I’m struggling to find any information from ancestry.co.uk, findmypast and the other usual sites so would be grateful for any advice on useful sites for Swiss records please. Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for your replies, however as was suggested I have already found that information. What I am struggling to find are Swiss birth details which will help me to trace Parents and Grandparents in Switzerland and also confirm where he was born.  Thanks.

All Swiss families have a legal "place of origin", and their BMD details are registered with this place, regardless of where the event takes place.  (eg: my marriage in England is recorded at my husband's legal place of origin in Switzerland.)

The Matile family officially originates from La Sagne in the canton of Neuchâtel, so you may have found references to Aimé being "of La Sagne", even if he was born in Vevey.

If you are a direct descendant of Aimé, you can apply to for information about him to the register office which now covers that part of the canton of Neuchâtel.  (They may ask for proof of descent - it depends very much on the local register officer.)

English is probably OK - if you can write in French, so much the better!

If they can give you info taking the family back to the canton of Neuchâtel before about 1850, I have access to parish records for this period.  (Not for the canton of Vaud, unfortunately.)   :)

Brilliant, thank you that's really helpful. I am researching this for his grandson who is going to Neuchatel at the end of the month. I will also try those links. Thanks again.
