Why was the death not registered ?
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 16:43 BST (UK) »
I have posted this here as it is a general query although it relates to Scotland.

My query being -  why would a child's death not be registered ?

The birth was registered in 1861 ( I have a copy from SP) but after that the child just disappears ? No trace of him in subsequent census records with his family. Certainly no death record. Although by this date Registration was a legal requirement.

Any ideas please.

Thanks

Dorrie

Maybe the family emigrated?

Or maybe the child died in infancy?

Name mis-transcribed/recorded?

Have you looked for a burial record?

Scouseboy  -  The family did not emigrate. His parents were my gg grandparents.
If he died in infancy it was still a legal obligation to register the death.

Nany Jan    -   No burial record that I can find.
That's a thought maybe incorrect first name put on death certificate. Will look into
                      this.

Pharma T    -   Maybe, but he was their firstborn and other children followed shortly afterwards.
Two of whom died young and their deaths were registered. The only child to survive
                      was my gt grandmother.

Thanks to you all and I will keep searching.

Perhaps he only lived a short time and they just didn't bother to register his death.

Mystery solved folks.

This has been bugging me for a long time.

Its amazing what fresh minds can come up with.

Took Nanny Jan's tip and there it was on SP. His death was registered using his father's first name not the one on his birth certificate. Maybe his mother who could neither read nor write confused the registrar as she must have been very distressed when her first child died aged 7 months.

Thanks again for your input.

That must be a real "Pain" Nanny jan.

I had tried so many variations of the baby's surname never thought it would be the first name - schoolgirl error - on my part :'(

Thanks again to you all till the next time ;D
