morris family St Oysth Essex
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 21:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, iam tracing my fathers side, the surname of Morris. I have hit a  big brick wall with my 3rd great grandfather Hugh John Morris (or John Hugh)born about 1770 but unsure if his birth was in st osyth or elsewhere. He married 3 times all at St Peter and St Pauls in the village once in 1797 to Ann Death, on the wed doc he is down as hugh then on same doc he is john and also john were he has put his mark? then in about 1802 to Sarah they had a daughter Charlotte born 1805, he then married again in 1818 to Mary Austin (nee Nanton) he is down as John Maurice they had my 2nd great grandfather Isaac born 1818 in in st osyths, baptised 16, 8.1818 and father is down as John Morris.  I have a death cert, Down as Hugh died march 1845 St Oysth.I know ive gone on a bit but if anyone could shed any light on hugh john(or john hugh) morris I would be grateful.
Thanks Mary

hi mary
all I can find in st osyth parish registers from 1760-1800 for any morrises is this one for a john morris bpt 19 nov 1793 father john mum Elizabeth so looked for a marriage for the said john and Elizabeth between 1770 -1785 and nothing .
what other areas around toosyth have you looked or found morrises I don't mind searching if you can give an idea of where .

Hi Trevor,
thankyou for looking I didnt find that baptism,  great find will look in to that, I suppose he could gave got baptised at a later age! where did you find it?
All the info I have on the morris family is after John/Hugh and that eventually the family goes to East London. Funnily enough though my dad and mum moved East Mersea. So not that far from St Oysth.
I have tried looking at other parishes around st oysth, might have better luck now with a possible match for a mum and dad for John.
thanks Mary

hi mary
seax is a subscription service you can buy a sub for 1day at £10 upto a year for £85 so not exactly cheap for a days sub only if you have enough folk you wish to find or a wide area to cover to make use of the time .
as to wether he was bpt at a later age yes it is possible ive come across folk bpt in later life more usual just before marriage id say as some clerics wouldn't marry folk if they hadn't been bpt also some parents who couldn't afford to bpt children waited and saved up it seems and had them all done at the same time later , others may have different views on the subject .
if you don't have access to seax where does your info come from re the dates and and marriage details .
best wishes

Hi Trevor, thank you for the info on seax, I will try a day to see how I get on and go from there. I am on the ancestry site and gathered alot of infomation from that and have ordered bdm certificates where possible.  I just wish I had spoken to my dad an mum more about our past but unfortunately when you were younger it didnt seem necessary or interesting.
thanks again and I will see how it goes
