George Stanley Fox- Birmingham
« on: Friday 12 August 16 11:39 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace George Stanley Fox born March 1907 in Birmingham.  He appears on the 1911 Census as an inmate of Birmingham Western Road Workhouse - his mother Roseina nee Lawley having died there 6 days prior to the census.  His father was Thomas Fox (also known as George Thomas Fox).  Thomas Fox died at Gallipoli in June 1915.  On his memorial certificate it states he is the father of George S Fox.  In his WW1 will leaves everything to his sister Harriet Smith of Old Mill, Clent.  She was in fact his aunt but his mother had him illegitimately aged 14 so on various censuses his grandparents are shown as his parents.  I can find no further trace of George S Fox.  My father has a vague memory of visiting Clent with his parents and meeting someone who may have been a policeman.  This would have been in the 1930's or 40's.  This cousin of my fathers came as a complete surprise whilst researching the family history.  Can anyone help please?

I am a little confused
there is this baptism record (from image)
Hockley All Sts Birmingham
Page 120 entry 12
George Stanley(no d) Fox
born 27 mar 1907
baptism 14 April 1907
Parents George Thomas & Mary jane
father's occ Stamper

this (by the birth date) looks like George Standley Fox in the Rn & Seamans register
and on birth registration

but you stated his mother is Roseina Nee Lawley

could you post which records your information was obtained??

Thanks for so many interesting and quick responses.  The discrepancy on his baptism record is that Mary Jane was his grandmother but appears as the mother.  Not sure why but wondered if his mother was already ill at that time.

The record of the seaman looks interesting as it has the correct date of birth.  I will follow that one up.
There is another George Standley Fox who was born at around the same time which makes it confusing but I have been able to eliminate him based on the knowledge of the the family I already had.

The marriage is the correct one but the glasscutter shown as his father was in fact his grandfather.  No record is known of either his father or his brother's father (born 7 years later).

Thanks everyone.  This is my first posting and I'm so excited to check into the info you've provided
