Cornwall: William Henry WATERS, born Truro (?), 1839
« on: Friday 12 August 16 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have traced this gentleman's criminal career, centred in Cornwall, through the 1850's successfully (I think) but am confused by the following report in The Royal Cornwall Gazette etc. published on 15/10/1880 which states that:

At the Taunton Police-court on Monday, William Henry Waters of Truro, a convicted
felon, was charged under the Act for the Prevention of Crimes with neglecting to
report himself at the police-station.   The prisoner had been sentenced to seven years
penal servitude and seven years police supervision for picking pockets.........NB:  Picking
Pockets seems to have been his favourite modus operandi!!)

I cannot find any reference in the appropriate indexes to his trial in which that sentence was laid down, extending my search back 14 years at the extreme to 1866 from 1880.

Can anyone help please  ???

For the moment,

BAC3

Thank You Priscilla,

I think the 1840 suggestion is probably the best.

For now,
