Finding a house on an online map
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 21:37 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find Hampt at Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, England, so that I can visit.  My grandfather lived there.

Welcome to RootsChat. :)

Can you tell us when he lived there and perhaps his name?  The house may well have changed its name by now.  Is there any indication of the name of the road?

Are you referring to Hampton Manor at Stoke Climsland?  According to Google Books it is now a place of Christian prayer, teaching and witness.

It sounds like it may have been a big house, it is described as Victorian.

The postcode for it is PL17 8LX

Is there any other kind of connection other than that your grandfather lived there?

I see that Stoke Climsland is part of the Launceston registration district.

Hampt seems to be the name of a number of settlements.  This map shows Higher Hampt, Middle Hampt & Lower Hampt:

All three places still marked on the modern OS map.  I think that your grandfather lived in one of these hamlets.  This might be more difficult than it initially appeared.  :-\

You could  try the local authority  web site,   see  if they have maps  locatable by post codes.  ( OR Google.   just type in that post code)

Added  by subsequent Edit:      www.cornwall.gov.uk     is the local authority web site.

They may have excellent maps on their Planning section.

The side by side function of the NLS site as mentioned by LIttle Nell might be useful

In the address list for the 1911 census there are two mentions of Hampt, and one of Hampt Luckett so certainly around then.

Using Streetmap (http://www.streetmap.co.uk), searching for Higher Hampt will allow you to view the current OS map.
