Charlotte Anne Dewar 1867-?
« on: Friday 19 August 16 11:39 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Can someone please help me solve a mystery regarding my wife's Great Grand Aunt?

Charlotte Anne Dewar was born on 15/12/1867 in Tulliallan, Kincardine, Perthshire https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ9Z-483

I can find her in the 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census records (1901 Census attached), as far as i can tell she does not appear on a 1911 Census in Britain (I have tried Scotland's People and Find My Past). I have searched for marriages & deaths for 1901-1911 in Britain and cannot find her.

The only thing I can find is a listing on FamilySearch in the Canada Passenger Lists for 1909 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2QS2-YFP

This is the same year as her father died (her mother had already died in 1905).

I have been unable to verify if this is the Charlotte I'm looking for (there is no age/DOB given). I cannot find her in Canada after that (although I have no experience of searching Canadian records).

Can anyone suggest a course of action, or provide any assistance on a search please?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Graeme

Only circumstantial but as she's travelling upper class indicates she's from a wealthy family which your Charlotte was, also using the same middle initial.

On the Scotland National Probate Index (A*try) there'a an entry for Charlotte Anne DEWAR death April 14  1922 Edinburgh. Confirmation to brother Thomas William DEWAR, merchant, her brother.

Would this be her?

Hi Maureen,

Her father Robert Menzies Dewar died in 1909 as you have already said. His death certificate and his Will are both available to view and download from Scotlands People.

As said by Maureen,  Charlotte died in 1922. Same applies as with her father.

This does of course not solve the mystery of where she was in 1911 but it is obvious that she returned to Scotland at some point. Perhaps she only went to Canada for a visit ?

Hope this helps.

BIG Thank you to everyone!

Just checked out 1922 on Scotland's People, and yes, that is the correct Charlotte. Looks like she spent some time at her brother's home, and then moved on.

Thanks again.

Looks like she didn't stay in Canada for very long. Miss C A Dewar returned to Glasgow (1st Class) from Montreal 20 Jul 1909 on the Grampian. If this is the right one it doesn't solve her whereabouts in 1911.

Thanks CB53,

A holiday it was then. I'm beginning to think I've missed something on the 1911 Census. Hmmm.

Try a different spelling of her surname.

Checked the 1911 Census on SP for her with a variety of options - nothing. Her brother is there though.

Perhaps Charlotte was away on her travels again. After all she was a wealthy, single woman.

Just a thought.
